Super League 2015 Week 7

Salford 36-8 Widnes

Salford Red Devils have climbed to fourth in the Super League table after thrashing Widnes Vikings 36-8 in this evening's clash at the AJ Bell Stadium.

The hosts opened the scoring after just three minutes when a grubber kick by Rangi Chase went to Ben Jones-Bishop, who was able to touch down before Josh Griffin converted.

It would get better for the hosts as a Michael Dobson kick in the 12th minute was found by Weller Hauraki, who crossed for his side's second try of the night.

Greg Johnson then touched down on the half-hour mark to put the Red Devils even further ahead, but a late flurry from Vikings, comprising of a Paddy Flynn try and a conversion and a penalty by Jack Owens, ensured a half-time score of 16-8.

Any hope of a second-half comeback from the visitors was soon snuffed out when Lama Tasi crossed over in the 46th minute, before the hosts went on to run riot thanks to further tries from Griffin, Cory Paterson and Scott Taylor.

Castleford 20-14 Hull FC

Two second-half tries from Justin Carney and James Clare have helped Castleford Tigers beat Hull FC 20-14 in the Super League.

Castleford scored the first try of a scrappy first half when Grant Millington broke through the Hull defence, and he found Luke Gale to score.

Hull thought they had hit back immediately, but Jordan Thompson's try was ruled out for a foul.
However, Tom Lineham soon crossed for the visitors when he was fed by a neat Steve Michaels pass and he touched the ball down unopposed.

Castleford extended their lead in the second minute of the second half, when an Andy Lynch break was finished by Gale for his second of the game, but Lineham also scored his second minutes later.

The Hull winger then completed a fine hat-trick with just over 20 minutes to play, as he touched the ball down in the corner after he was played into acres of space.

Castleford regained a slender lead in the 63rd minute, when Carney used his strength and power to barge past Lineham and score his side's third try in the corner, and they then confirmed victory when Clare took advantage of a Hull handling error to score in the corner.

Hull KR 24-22 St Helens

Hull Kingston Rovers have maintained their strong home record against St Helens with a 24-22 victory in the Super League.

The defending champions made a fast start and scored the game's first try after just five minutes when Jon Wilkin took advantage of a lucky defection to score under the posts.

However, Hull stunned the visitors with two identical tries from Albert Kelly, who levelled the score when he intercepted a St Helens grubba kick and raced the length of the field to touch the ball down.

A few minutes later he intercepted a St Helens pass near his own goal line, and repeated his earlier run to score a try.

St Helens levelled the scores shortly after as Tommy Makinson side-stepped his way through the defence to touch the ball down on his 100th Super League appearance.

However, Hull regained the lead shortly before the break when Ken Sio scored following a high ball from Terry Campese.

St Helens failed to break through a strong Hull KR defence early in the second half, and they were hit with a sucker punch when Kieran Dixon scored for Hull in the 62nd minute.

However, they dragged themselves back into the game when Louie McCarthy-Scarbrook scored with six minutes to go, and Jordan Turner touched down in the last minute.

The result hinged on Travis Burns's conversion, but he pushed it wide to confirm St Helens' first loss of the season.

Warrington Wolves 10-29 Huddersfield

The Huddersfield Giants have won their fourth game in a row with an impressive 29-10 win away at Warrington Wolves.

The visitors scored the first try of the match after just seven minutes, when scrum-half Jamie Ellis latched onto the end of his own grubba kick to touch the ball down under the posts.

Both sides struggled to create too many clear chances in the rest of the half, until Danny Brough kicked a drop goal to extend the Giants lead just before the break.

The game sparked into life in the second half, as Brough's kick was converted by Aaron Murphy, before the Wolves responded with a try from Gareth O'Brien.

Kevin Penny then crossed in the corner for the Wolves' second try but, again, Huddersfield hit back immediately with Murphy's second.

They then secured victory through two late tries from James McGillvary and Eorl Crabtree.

Wigan Warriors 52-10 Wakefield

Wigan Warriors have thrashed Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 52-10, thanks to nine tries in the Super League tonight.

The home side made a fast start, as Joe Burgess offloaded to Liam Farrell to score the game's first try deep in the corner after three minutes.

Matty Smith successfully kicked a penalty to add two more to the score, before Tony Clubb weaved past two defenders to score his side's second.

The Warriors extended their lead through Dominic Manfredi's try, before Wakefield hit back through Chris Riley's score in the corner.

However, Wakefield continued to struggle defensively as a weak pass was intercepted by Anthony Gelling, and he scored his side's fourth.

Manfredi and Gelling were too hot for the Wildcats to handle and they combined for Wigan's fifth after the break, which Manfredi neatly finished.

Paul McShane gave Wakefield a glimmer of hope with a try from close-range, but Wigan quickly added two more tries through Lee Mossop and Farrell.

They reached 50 points late in the game as Gelling scored his second and Manfredi complete his hat-trick.

Catalan 22-38 Leeds

Leeds Rhinos climbed to the top of the Super League with a come-from-behind victory over the Catalans Dragons this evening.

Visitors Leeds had a narrow 10-6 lead midway through the game at the Stade Gilbert Brutus thanks to first-half tries from Carl Ablett and Stevie Ward.

Catalans then took over with three unanswered tries at the start of the second half, two of which were converted, from Elliott Whitehead, Eloi Pelissier and Damien Cardace to give them a 22-10 advantage.

With a little over 20 minutes remaining, Leeds ran riot with five tries to come out on top 36-22 by the final whistle.

Brad Singleton, Danny McGuire, Liam Sutcliffe, Kallum Watkins and Zak Hardaker all went over as the hosts, now 10th in the standings, fell apart in the closing stages.

Super League 2015 Week 6

St Helens 32-24 Warrington

St Helens made it six consecutive Super League victories by defeating Warrington Wolves at Langtree Park this evening.

Joe Greenwood opened the scoring for the current champions, finding a gap in Warrington's defence after strong build-up play.

Wolves responded immediately when Daryl Clark went over after Mose Masoe was penalised for a shoulder charge, with Stefan Ratchford converting to level matters.

However, Saints took a stranglehold on the match thanks to tries from Jon Wilkin and Adam Swift, with Travis Burns making it three kicks from three as the home side headed into half time 18-6 ahead.

Micky Higham gave the visitors hope after the break, squeezing through to bring Warrington within six after Gareth O'Brien converted.

Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook scored Saints' fourth try of the game, before Tommy Makinson seemingly put the tie beyond Wolves.

Late tries from Kevin Penny and Chris Hill gave the Wolves hope, but after Burns's penalty put Saints eight clear, the home side stood firm to make it six wins from six.

Castleford 30-16 Salford

Castleford Tigers ran in six tries on their way to a 30-16 victory over Salford City Red Devils in the Super League this evening.

The scores were shared around as the Tigers responded to their rout by Hull Kingston Rovers last weekend with a good team performance.

Conversions added by Luke Gale to tries from Justin Carney and Liam Finn put Castleford 12 points ahead within the opening quarter of an hour.

Salford's Tommy Lee pulled one back before Michael Shenton restored the Tigers' cushion on 23 minutes, and Castleford went further ahead through Scott Wheeldon's effort on the stroke of the break.

James Clare and Josh Carney got their names on the scoresheet in the second period as the hosts stormed into an unassailable lead which rendered Ben Jones-Bishop's 71st-minute reply for Salford a mere consolation.

Despite the result, the Red Devils remain one point above Castleford in the middle of the early-season table.

Hull FC 33-22 Catalan Dragons

Hull FC climbed off the bottom of the Super League table courtesy of a 33-22 victory over Catalans Dragons this evening.

Tom Lineham's second-half brace helped the hosts pull away after six tries were shared before the break at the KC Stadium.

It was Catalans who opened the scoring as Vincent Duport touched down on 14 minutes, but Marc Sneyd inspired Hull's first-half comeback.

The stand-off converted his own try on 21 minutes before adding the extras to efforts from Stephen Michaels and Fetuli Talanoa as the interval approached.

Thomas Bosc's reply on the stroke of half time ensured that the Dragons were not out of the game, but Lineham's 12-minute double put Hull 32-10 ahead.

Tries from Morgan Escare and Zeb Taia gave the scoreline a more respectable outlook for the French outfit, who remain fourth in the table, only a point above 10th-placed Hull.

Leeds 26-14 Wigan

Leeds Rhinos closed the gap on Super League leaders St Helens with a 26-14 victory over rivals Wigan Warriors this evening.

A fifth win of the season takes the Rhinos to within two points of the Saints, but Wigan are already off the pace having lost three of their opening six games.

Matty Smith gave the Warriors an early lead with a try inside the opening 10 minutes, but Leeds soon overturned that deficit.

Adam Cuthbertson and Ash Handley went over either side of the 20-minute mark before Brad Singleton crossed to put the hosts 16-6 ahead.

Wigan pulled within four by half time as Smith added the extras to a Joe Burgess effort, but the Rhinos ran away from them in the second half.

Liam Sutcliffe, who also contributed three conversions, touched down on the hour mark and Rob Burrow made sure of the points with Leeds' fifth try on 67 minutes.

Wakefield 14-44 Huddersfield

A hat-trick of tries from Scott Grix inside the opening nine minutes paved the way for Huddersfield Giants to claim a storming 44-14 victory over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at Belle Vue this evening.

Grix showed plenty of determination when the ball was offloaded to him by Brett Ferres to touch down for the first inside two minutes, before being played in by Joe Wardle for a second in quick succession.

The treble was completed after he latched onto Craig Hall's kick and ran 90m down field to cross over, with Danny Brough successful with all three follow-up kicks.

That left the hosts with an almighty mountain to climb, but they gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Dean Collis and Danny Kirmond pulled two back for their side prior to the interval.

Dan Smith thought he had completed the comeback when he went down under the posts, only for the referee to rule it out due to a forward pass in the build-up.

Another replacement in Jordan Crowther did find the chalk, though, who made the most of Paul McShane's pass to pull his side back to within four points.

However, three unanswered tries from Ferres, Brough and Leroy Cudjoe, the latter of which resulted from an intercepted pass, ensured that Huddersfield had plenty of breathing space in the closing stages, with Ukuma Ta'ai crossing over at the death to seal the points.

Widnes Vikings 20-16 Hull KR

Widnes Vikings have moved up to fifth place in the Super League table courtesy of a slender 20-16 victory over Hull Kingston Rovers at the Select Security Stadium.

The two sides shared a score apiece as Paddy Flynn and Ben Cockayne crossed over inside the opening 16 minutes of the game, which set the tone for the remainder.

Danny Galea then bashed over from close range to give the hosts a foothold in the game, while Jack Owens was successful with his kick in what was the last piece of meaningful play of the half to create just a little breathing space.

It looked to be all over when Flynn touched down for a second time on 54 minutes, shortly after Hull had a try of their own turned down, but Liam Salter and Kris Welham pulled things right back when they found the chalk within three minutes of each other.

Josh Mantellato made no mistake with the follow-up on both occasions to leave just four points in it heading into the final stages, although the Robins fell just short in the end by failing to add a decisive fourth try in the remaining time.

RBS Six Nations Finale Sat 21st March 2015

After a thrilling day of rugby Ireland win the title on points difference.

ITA 20-61 WAL

Wales have cruised to an emphatic 61-20 win over Italy to keep their chances of winning the Six Nations championship alive on the final day of the tournament.

The hosts made things difficult in the first half for Warren Gatland's side as Giovanbattista Vendittt's try cancelled out an early effort from Jamie Roberts, leaving Wales just a point ahead at the break.

However, the visitors surged ahead while Andrea Masi was in the sin bin for the Azzurri, leaving George North to score a hat-trick of tries in just 10 minutes.

Rhys Webb, Liam Williams and Sam Warburton all crossed the line as well as Italy's defence crumbled, while Scott Williams added an eighth for the visitors late on.

Leonardo Sarto sprinted clear for a consolation in the final minute, but the win means England and Ireland will need convincing wins to move above Wales in the final standings.

SCO 10-40 IRE

Ireland have returned to the top of the standings in the 2015 Six Nations championship with a 40-10 win over Scotland at Murrayfield this afternoon.

Ireland headed into the match knowing that they needed to win by more than 20 points to move back above Wales in the standings, and they made a strong start as Paul O'Connell powered over inside the opening five minutes.

Sean O'Brien created some space to run the ball over for a second, but the hosts kept the scores close at the interval as Finn Russell burst down the line to keep the hosts in contention.

The visitors were dominant at the start of the second half as they tried to open up the required gap, resulting in a try for Jeryd Payne, leaving Ireland and Wales level on points difference.

Ireland had a lineout late on as they tried to keep their title hopes alive, and O'Brien managed to squeeze over after taking the ball from Jamie Heaslip.

The result moves Ireland ahead of Wales, but they can still be caught by England in the final match of the tournament if they beat France by 26 points.

ENG 55-35 FRA

England found themselves a converted try away from winning the Six Nations, but they ultimately fell short as they conceded five tries against France to secure a 55-35 win, which meant that the championship went to Ireland.

The hosts, needing to win by 26 points to overtake Joe Schmidt's charges, opened the scoring within the first two minutes as a misplaced forward pass in the middle of the park allowed Jonathan Joseph to charge down the right wing at pace.

The ball was then shipped inside to Tom Youngs, who burst over the line, and George Ford converted to mark a perfect start for England, whose target was set after Ireland beat Scotland 40-10 earlier in the day.

France were however able to get back into the game when Ford held the ball for too long, prompting the referee to give the visitors a penalty that Jules Plisson slammed between the posts.

Just moments later Les Bleus were in the lead after Billy Vunipola's misplaced pass to Courtney Lawes was plucked out of the air and sent to Sebastien Tillous-Borde, who charged down the left wing before crossing over.

When Noa Nakaitaci bundled over the line in the 17th minute, it looked like England's Six Nations dream was in tatters.

Stuart Lancaster's charges, however, rallied round through a Ford penalty and a try apiece for Anthony Watson and Youngs before the break.

This would seemingly set the stage for England to get the 26 points needed to overtake Ireland at the top of the Six Nations, but France had other ideas.

Guilhem Guirado was felled by a crunching tackle as he marauded towards the posts, but Maxime Mermoz collected the ball before crossing over to deflate the hosts.

The game then descended into an open-ended barrage of tries from both sides as England fans' emotions swayed from hope to despair and back again.

Jack Nowell ran in two tries while George Ford and Billy Vunipola scored one apiece, but Les Bleus were always just behind in the scoreline stakes as Vincent Debaty and Benjamin Kayser stopped England from reaching that all-elusive points target to pip Ireland at the top.

There was to be no fairytale ending for the hosts at Twickenham as France held firm to lose by just 20 points, leaving England to contemplate another second-placed finish in the Six Nations.

RBS 6 Nations Week 5 ITA 0-29 FRA

ITA 0-29 FRA

France have dominated Italy in their Six Nations encounter, thrashing them 29-0.

Both teams started poorly, while making simple errors.

The game remained scoreless until the 28th minute, when Camille Lopez successfully converted a penalty; achieving what the three previous kickers couldn't.

After going 3-0 up, France clicked and started converting their chances as Lopez was on hand to double their lead five minutes later.

France went into the half 9-0 ahead, with Italy posing no signs of staging a comeback.

The visitors converted a couple more second-half penalties before making their first breakthrough.

Yoann Maestri provided a moment of quality as he scored his first try for France in 35 matches.

The Italians still had no reply as the French took control of the game.

Mathieu Bastareaud went over in the 81st minute to complete the performance in what was a one-sided affair for most of the second half.

RBS 6 Nations Week 5 WAL 23-16 IRE & ENG 25-13 SCO

WAL 23-16 IRE

Wales ended Ireland's hopes of claiming the Grand Slam with a thrilling 23-16 win at the Millenium Stadium this afternoon.
Leigh Halfpenny kicked three early penalties to put Wales into the lead, the third of which was a colossal effort from half way.
Halfpenny's boot then extended his side's advantage further after Samson Lee had been stretched off the field, beforeJonathan Sexton, who was winning his 50th cap for Ireland, pushed his first effort at goal wide of the posts.
Sexton made amends with his second penalty as he pulled Ireland back into contention in an intriguing first half that was low on try-scoring action but high on suspense.
The tide appeared to have turned in Ireland's favour when saw Sam Warburton was sin binned, but Wales managed their numerical deficit superbly, holding onto the ball and probing the Irish defence before Dan Biggar boomed a drop goal between the posts shortly before the break.
Ireland came roaring out of the blocks at the start of the second half, and only some superb defensive play from the hosts kept their opponents out.
Bloodied and bruised but with their lead still in tact, Wales then began to push forward and scored the first try of the game when Scott Williams collected Biggar's pass and skipped beyond Tommy Bowe to touch down just after the hour mark.
Ireland came surging back, however, and Sexton's decision to kick for touch when faced with an easy three points was vindicated when Ireland were awarded a penalty try after Wales were penalised for collapsing the maul following the lineout.
Another Halfpenny penalty sent Wales a score clear on 74 minutes, but Ireland were given hope when Jonathan Davies was sent to the sin bin in the dying minutes.

However, Wales survived a late Irish onslaught to hold out for the win and keep alive their hopes of winning the Six Nations.

ENG 25-13 SCO
England kept their Six Nations dreams alive with victory over Scotland at Twickenham, lifting the Calcutta Cup in the process.
England got off to a flying start, with Jonathan Josephscoring his fourth try of the tournaments, finding a gap in Scotland's defence following George Ford's pass.
The home side maintained a strong tempo, and Mike Brown, returning to the side after suffering concussion against Italy, was tackled just yards from the try line after angling a run from the left wing.
Scotland made the most of their first period of pressure, with Mark Bennett going over before a touchline conversion from Greig Laidlaw.
George Ford's penalty gave England the lead, but it was Scotland who headed into the break 13-10 in front after two kicks from Laidlaw.
After Wales ended Ireland's Grand Slam hopes earlier in the day, England knew they would have to raise their level in the second half to overcome a resurgent Scotland.
And just four minutes into the half, Bath fly-half Ford broke the line with a dummy pass to score under the posts, before converting to give England a four-point lead.
Ford's boot then extended England's lead to seven points, as the pack tried their utmost to wear down Scottish defence.
A forward pass from James Haskell on the 10m line denied Mike Brown a try after the full-back ran under the sticks, with referee Roman Poite referring the decision to the TMO.
Ford's 40-yard penalty effort bounced off the post and England consequently pounced on the ball before passing out wide, with winger Jack Nowell claiming his second try in seven internationals.
England ran down the final minutes to secure a valuable victory, leaving them level with Ireland and Wales, but ahead on points difference, with just one round of fixtures remaining.

Super League 2015 Week 5

Huddersfield 22-0 Castleford

Huddersfield Giants beat Castleford Tigers 22-0 in the Super League at the John Smith Stadium.
Both teams had won just one out of their first four Super League matches, and it proved to be a cautious affair throughout the match.
With just one score in the first half, the second half was livelier as Ukuma Ta'ai and Aaron Murphy ran in tries to extend Huddersfield's lead.
After a drab start to the match, it took until the 23rd minute for either team to come close to scoring when Joe Wardle's effort was ruled out by the video referee.
With the match looking to go to a rare Super League score-less half time, Jamie Ellis finished off a good Huddersfield move to try under the posts, and Danny Brough added the extra two points to give Huddersfield a 6-0 half-time lead.
Ta'ai added another try for Huddersfield just after the break, breaching the Castleford defence to cross the line.
Murphy scored Huddersfield's third try with 17 minutes remaining, crossing in the corner after Brough's pass.
This time, Brough failed with the conversion, but he redeemed himself two minutes later from a penalty. James Clare impeded Brough who kicked the ball through the posts.
Castleford tried to pull some points back in the closing stages, but were let down by a number of knock-ons to halt their attacks.
Jermaine McGillvary added a fourth try just before full-time when he crossed over on the left wing.
Huddersfield Giants move up to fifth in the Super League with the victory.

Warrington Wolves 18-6 Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos have fallen to their first defeat of the Super League season having been eased out 18-6 byWarrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium this evening.
Kevin Penny and Stefan Ratchford crossed over for the only tries of the opening 40 minutes, the latter being awarded following much deliberation from the video referees over whether the ball hand been knocked on in the process of it being grounded.
Ratchford was on hand to kick over the extras on both occasions to ensure that the hosts looked to pick up the win which would see them draw level with their opponents in the league table.
There was to be no looking back for The Wire following the restart, either, as they added to their tally whenRyan Atkins made the most of an error from Kevin Sinfield to cross over just short of the hour mark.
Tom Briscoe did manage to round off a fine team move to give the Loiners just a glimmer of hope shortly after, but despite Sinfield kicking the extras it was not to be as they fell short for the first time this campaign.

Both sides are now locked on eight points after playing five games.

Widnes Vikings 20-30 St Helens

St Helens have maintained their winning start to the Super League season by producing an impressive second-half display to overcome Widnes Vikings 30-20 at the Select Security Stadium.
Eamon O'Carroll barged over from close range to open the scoring for the hosts, with Danny Tickle successfully converting to bring up 100 goal kicks in Vikings colours.
The game was soon level, though, as Lance Hohaia squeezed his way over having spotted a gap to break into, while Travis Burns also made no mistake from the follow-up attempt.
Having stood up well to the pressure being put on them by the visitors, the Chemics edged back ahead prior to the interval when Patrick Ah Van used his full frame to cross over. Stefan Marsh then added to the scoring with two successful goals in the closing stages of the first half to put Widnes on their way.
It was to be St Helens who ran away with things in the second half, however, racking up three tries within 17 minutes of the restart through Atelea VeaLuke Thompson and Jordan Turner to turn the contest on its head.
Burns was on target with each of the conversions to ensure that his side held control of the game heading into the closing stages.
An injury-hit Widnes showed some character as they battled away, and they were rewarded thanks toAaron Heremaia's score late on which made the scoreline just that little bit more respectable.
Defeat for Leeds Rhinos against Warrington Wolves elsewhere this evening ensures that the Saints take top spot in the Super League table.

Wigan Warriors 13-12 Hull FC

Wigan Warriors have climbed up to fifth place in the Super League table by holding on to edge out Hull FC 13-12 at the DW Stadium this evening.
First blood went the way of the home side as Matty Smithhelped to pick out Joel Tomkins, who in turn burst over the line for the first score of the contest inside the opening 10 minutes.
Smith stepped up to kick the extras, taking him just two short of a career landmark of 350 match points, although it was not until shortly before the interval until the next key moment of the game.
Having opted to go for goal with a penalty, Smith opened up an eight-point advantage for the Cherry and Whites, before a 40-yard burst down the touchline from Tomkins allowed Dan Sarginson to cross over for another first-half try.
Hull were desperately trying to get a foothold in the contest, and they did exactly that shortly after the restart when Fetuli Talanoa capitalised on a drop ball to reduce the arrears somewhat.
There was to be no comeback, however, as Smith kicked over a drop goal in front of the sticks to extend the advantage a little further, and despite Callum Lancaster's late attempt to drag his side back into it there was to be no dramatic twist in the dying stages.
Hull, still with just the one win this season, are now tied with rivals Hull Kingston Rovers on two points at the bottom of the early standings.
Hull KR 50-20 Catalans Dragons

Ken Sio scored a hat-trick of tries as Hull Kingston Rovers' thrashed Catalans Dragons 50-20.

The Robins scored nine tries in the match, with the majority of them coming in the second half.

The visitors got off to a quick start, scoring the game's first try in just 80 seconds as Willie Tonga penetrated some soft defence on Rovers' right edge.

Sio responded 10 minutes later with his first try, as the home side punished Morgan Escare's mistake.

Three tries in eight first-half minutes put the Dragons in a commanding position as they headed into half time with a 20-6 lead.

However, Hull got a try back on the stroke of half-time, as Ben Cockayne went over a minute before the whistle.

Albert Kelly began Hull's comeback three minutes after the restart, with Sio getting his second shortly afterwards.

The Australian then completed his hat-trick as the visitors failed to handle a smart Kelly kick-through.

Liam Salter and Shaun Lunt added their names to the scorer's list, while Cockayne grabbed his second try of the match minutes before the full-time whistle.

Salford 24-18 Wakefield

Salford Red Devils have beaten Wakefield Wildcats 24-18 in a close Super League encounter.

Three first-half tries from the hosts did the damage, despite the Wildcats trying to stage a late comeback.

The visitors opening the scoring in the 18th minute through Jacob Miller, only for Greg Johnson to reply with his own try a minute later.

Tries from Weller Hauraki and Rangi Chase on either side of half-time gave the Red Devils a deserved 16-6 lead.

Paul McShane replied for the visitors but the reduced deficit didn't last long as Junior Sa'u went over to keep the home side up by two tries.

Both teams cancelled each other out as the match headed for the final whistle but Craig Hall provided a nervy finish with his late try and conversion.

Salford held on to beat Wakefield 24-18 in their Super League encounter.

Super League 2015 Week 4

Warrington Wolves 32-24 Hull KR

Warrington Wolves came from behind twice to defeat a spirited Hull Kingston Rovers side 32-24 in their Super League clash.
The visitors had a strong start to the game and they took the lead when Josh Mantellato found space in the line to go over to score the first try of the match in the seventh minute.
Warrington hit back with two scores within six minutes as Matthew Russell and Joel Monaghan found the try line, finishing incisive attacking moves from the hosts.
Joe Philbin handed the Wolves command of the game when he powered over from close range, only to be pegged back before the break by Mantellato's second try of the game, which brought Hull within two points.
In the second half, the visitors retook the lead as Kevin Larroyer bundled himself over the tryline despite the best efforts of two tacklers from the home side.
However, Hull's lead lasted just three minutes when Russell broke free up the middle and he passed to Gary Wheeler, who ensured his side got the maximum as he ensured an easy kick for Stefan Ratchford.
Russell himself put Warrington back in control of the game as he went over in the corner, but Hull kept themselves alive in the match with an immediate score from Graeme Horne.
The Wolves finally managed to secure the win when Ben Currie raced away up the middle and managed to shake off the last man, attempting a last-ditch tackle, to go in for the try in the dying minutes.

Justin Carney picked up his second of the night less than 15 minutes in after dodging a tackle from Josh Charnley before diving over in the corner.
Charnley got Wigan off the mark before the end of the first half though, and kept them in contention with another shortly after the restart.
However, Castleford upped the intensity again to run in three tries in 15 minutes, with Michael Shenton among the scorers, opening up a 38-point lead.
Matty Smith added a late consolation, but it was not enough for Wigan to avoid their second defeat of the season, which leaves them seventh in the table, just one spot ahead of Castleford.

Huddersfield 24-12 Widnes Vikings

Huddersfield Giants dominated the second half of their match against Widnes Vikings to secure a 24-12 victory in the Super League this evening.

Huddersfield made a strong start to the second half, with tries from Jermaine McGillvary and Joe Wardle putting them in front, but Brough missed both conversions.
The missed kicks allowed Widnes to keep the scores close as Manase Manuokafoa charged over for the visitors, cutting the gap to just two points.
Wardle weaved through to add a second shorlty after though, while Eorl Crabtree was over a few minutes later to take the game away from the Vikings.

Wakefield 16-20 St Helens

Wakefield gave themselves some late hope when a chip forward set Richard Owen up for a score in the corner, leaving the hosts just a try behind with 10 minutes to go, but were unable to find another, despite pressing hard in the final minutes.
