Team Europe have won the Ryder Cup for a 10th time at Gleneagles this afternoon.
Paul McGinley's men went into today's singles encounters leading their American counterparts 10-6 following yesterday evening's round of foursomes.
Wins for world number one Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowelland Martin Kaymer, as well as a share of the spoils for Justin Rose from his encounter with Hunter Mahan, left the Europeans needing just one point to secure the Samuel Ryder trophy for another two years.
The responsibility of closing it out went to Welshman Jamie Donaldson, who initially spurned an opportunity to wrap up the victory on the 14th hole.
However, he went on to the 15th leading Keegan Bradley by four and when Donaldson dropped his approach shot within five inches of the hole, the American conceded, which sparked scenes of jubilant celebrations from the European players that had crowded around the green to support their teammate.
It is the tenth time that Europe has won the tournament since it first competed as a team in 1979, with eight of those triumphs having come in the last 10 meetings between the two sides.

Europe's Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson went on a birdie blitz against Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson of the USA to win their third consecutive match of the Ryder Cup in stunning fashion this morning.
After leading out Europe in both sessions and winning their fourball and foursome matches yesterday, the Anglo-Swedish duo again were chosen to go out first by captain Paul McGinley.
They didn't get off to the best of starts, though, as Kuchar rolled home his birdie putt after Rose and Stenson had both slid theirs by.
Rose made birdie at the par-5 2nd to respond immediately before Watson notched his first sub-par score to restore the US advantage at the 3rd.
At the 6th Kuchar found the cup from distance to extend the Americans' advantage to two holes, but that would be their last hole victory as Rose and Stenson between them incredibly birdied 10 holes in a row.
Kuchar and Watson birdied five of those 10, but they couldn't keep up with the on-fire European duo, with Rose in particular making several important putts.
At the 10th he made a putt from off the green to halve before again equalling the American birdie at 11.
Stenson's birdie at the 12th then put Europe ahead in the match for the first time before Rose again found his range with the short stick at 13.
It looked as if Europe would go 3 Up with three to play at the 15th when Stenson stiffed an approach to gimme range, but Kuchar made a huge putt from distance to keep the Europeans within two.
At the 16th, both Rose and Stenson were wayward off the tee, but Rose delivered a third shot to just a couple of feet that was good enough for the hole and a 3&2 victory.
Rose should play again this afternoon and will attempt to become the first European to ever win all five of his matches at a Ryder Cup. Stenson, however, is sitting out of the foursomes because of a tight back.
Donaldson & Westwood
US win 4&3
Furyk & Mahan
Jamie Donaldson and Lee Westwood of Europe failed to win a hole all match as Team USA's Hunter Mahan and Jim Furyk beat the British duo 4&3 in day two's fourballs at the 40th Ryder Cup.
Mahan and Furyk, who were both playing fourballs for the first time after sitting out yesterday's morning session, birdied four of the first seven holes to go 3 Up on the Europeans at the turn.
Holes eight to 13 were all halved as the Americans kept Europe at bay before they went Dormie 4 with an eagle at the short par-4 14th.
Mahan's drive on the 285-yard hole just rolled off the back edge of the green before he slid home the putt.
Europe then had to win every hole to salvage a half-point and their challenge ended at the 15th as Westwood's birdie try to extend the match went just by.

Bjorn & Kaymer
US win 5&3
Reed & Spieth
The American rookie duo of Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth have continued their 100% record at the 40th Ryder Cup by coming from two holes to behind to hammer Europe's Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer 5&3 at Gleneagles.
Bjorn and Kaymer got off to a fantastic start when the latter made a winning birdie at the 1st before Bjorn extended their lead to two holes with another birdie.
That would be the last hole that the Europeans won, though, as Reed and Spieth triumphed on seven of the next 12 to end the match at the 15th.
Wins at five, six and nine saw the Americans go in front at the turn and it would have been even better had Bjorn not chipped in at the 7th.
A birdie from Spieth at the par-3 10th put USA 2 Up and Reed then continued the duo's birdie run with two more at 13 and 14.
That put America 4 Up with four to play and they clinched the win with another birdie, their seventh in 10 holes, on the par-4 15th.
The latest scoreboard now reads Europe 6-5 USA, with the final fourball match of the day a tight one between Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter, Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker.
McIlroy & Poulter
A/S
Walker & Fowler
The European duo of Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter have secured an enthralling half-point in the 40th Ryder Cup's final fourball match against Team USA's Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker.
Poulter, after his first loss at the Ryder Cup since 2010 in the fourballs with Stephen Gallacher yesterday, got off to an encouraging start with a hole-winning birdie on the par-4 1st after a wayward tee shot into the rough.
The next three were halved before the European pair made a mess of the 5th, the hardest hole on the course, as Walker made a cool birdie to level the match.
Six and seven were halved before world number one McIlroy took over at the end of the front nine, birdieing the 8th and 9th to put Europe 2 Up at the turn.
Fowler gave the US a perfect start to the back nine by holing his shot from the greenside bunker at the par-3 10th, with McIlroy unable to answer with his birdie putt.
Walker then made hole-winning birdies at the 11th and 13th to put the match in the Americans' favour.
The short par-4 14th was halved in birdie threes before Poulter joined the party with an improbable chip-in from way short of the green at the 15th.
He saved McIlroy a tricky downhill putt, but it wasn't enough to win the hole as Fowler also made birdie.
Poulter would make a winning birdie at the next hole, though, to draw Europe level going to the par-3 17th, where both teams made par.
At the 18th, McIlroy, Poulter and Walker had secured birdies before Fowler's eagle putt to win it slid by to the left, so the match ended all square.
Going into the afternoon foursome session, the overall scoreboard now reads Europe 6.5-5.5 USA. The Ryder Cup is finely poised

2014 Ryder Cup - info on Day 2 Fourballs

World number one Rory McIlroy will play his third straight Ryder Cup match in day two's morning fourballs but has lost his partner from today, Sergio Garcia, and is joined by Ian Poulter.
Four-time Major winner McIlroy managed half a point from his two matches on day one, losing with Garcia in fourballs before scraping a half in the foursomes.
He will be joined in the final fourball match at Gleneagles by Poulter, who suffered his first Ryder Cup defeat in eight matches with local favourite Stephen Gallacher at the hands of young rookies Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth earlier today.
In the opening Saturday match, in-form duo Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson will lead Europe out for the second day running after winning both of their matches on day one.
They will again face Bubba Watson in fourballs, but this time the Masters champion is alongside Matt Kuchar instead of Webb Simpson.
Jamie Donaldson and Lee Westwood, after victory together in the foursomes, will play fourballs together in the second match against another new American duo, Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan.
The third match sees Reed and Spieth again together and facing Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer, who are another familiar duo from the morning.
Europe's only new pairing is McIlroy and Poulter, who are up against Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler. The American duo played all 36 holes today and halved both of their matches.

2014 Ryder Cup Day 1 Reaction

Europe's Justin Rose has expressed his joy at being able to secure two Ryder Cup points alongside Henrik Stenson on day one's fourballs and foursomes at Gleneagles.
The pair were picked by captain Paul McGinley to take part in both sessions in Scotland and they delivered this morning with a 5&4 win over the USA's Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson.
They returned to the course in this afternoon's fourballs and earned another point for Europe with a 2&1 victoryover Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson.
"It's been really really special," Rose told Sky Sports News. "The captain put a lot of faith in me and Henrik today and going out first this morning and keeping us together. For us to firstly play fourballs together and then gel - I thought we were really good today. It was a great day, really enjoyed it."

Europe Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley believes that his team showed "real strength of character" to fight back from a losing position this morning to end day one at Gleneagles with a 5-3 lead over the USA.
The defending champions suffered a one-point deficit following the fourballs session, but wins for Jamie Donaldsonand Lee Westwood, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson and Victor Dubuisson and Graeme McDowell gave Europe the lead.
Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia also fought back to earn half a point over Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker.
"We have seen in Ryder Cups over the years how important momentum is and we showed real strength of character to respond to that American surge and get blue back on the board inside six holes," BBC Sport quotes McGinley as saying.
"I think that Sergio Garcia's and Rory McIlroy's halve was as a good as a win, two out of three for the rookies was not bad and now we have to maintain that momentum."
McGinley and USA captain Tom Watson are due to announce their pairings for tomorrow's action within the next hour.

Graeme McDowell has paid tribute to teammate Victor Dubuisson after the duo ended Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley's unbeaten run at the Ryder Cup.
McDowell holed a 15-foot putt to ensure that he and Dubuisson gave Europe a 5-3 lead going into Saturday's play, and the Northern Irishman believes that the Frenchman can become "the next superstar in Europe" after his opening display in the competition.
The 35-year-old told Sky Sports News: "It was a long wait this morning having to wait and sit out watching the boys play, but Victor and I were really fired up for the afternoon.
"One thing about my Ryder Cup experiences is that I always get great partners. I've played with Rory McIlroy in the last couple but Victor is the next superstar in Europe. This kid is really, really good."
The action will resume on Saturday morning when the second round of fourballs gets underway at 7.35am.

2014 Ryder Cup Day 1/3 Fourballs & Foursomes (FRI)

Day 1 Morning Fourballs EUROPE first

Overall score: Europe 5 - 3 USA

Fourballs score: EUR 1.5 - 2.5 USA

Rose/Stenson beat Simpson/Watson 5&4

Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson have defeated Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 5&4 to win the opening point of the 2014 Ryder Cup for Europe.
After Simpson had mis-hit the first shot of the competition at Gleneagles, it was one-way traffic for the European pairing as they denied their opponents a win on any of the 14 holes that were played.
Stenson registered a birdie on the fourth to give himself and Rose an early two-shot lead but missed chances at six, seven and eight meant that they failed to capitalise on a slow start by Watson and Simpson.
However, another birdie from the Swede gave Europe a three-shot lead at the turn, and that soon became four shots at the start of the back nine.
The American duo managed to stop the rot on the following three holes but they played the 14th badly, and Rose took full advantage to hole from 10 feet for the win.

Bjorn/Kaymer A/S with Fowler/Walker

Jimmy Walker has holed a 10-foot putt on the last to earn himself and Rickie Fowler a share of their game withThomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer to leave the match at 1.5 apiece after the first three fourballs.
Both Kaymer and Bjorn made birdies on the opening four holes to move three shots ahead before Fowler found the cup with a testing putt on the fifth green.
The next three holes were shared but Walker produced a stunning shot from the greenside bunker on the ninth to hole out for an eagle to halve the deficit at the turn.
The tension was building as both pairings began to realise the magnitude of the game with what was transpiring elsewhere, and it was Bjorn who was the man to strike with a chip-in on the 13th.
The Dane and German maintained their lead of two shots until the 16th, but Walker replicated his brilliance from the ninth by chipping in at 16 to set up a nervy final two holes.
After the penultimate hole was shared, Europe approached the last knowing that they only needed to halve the hole, but missed putts from Bjorn and Kaymer gave Walker the chance to end the match at all square.
The American was left with around 10 feet to the hole, but he made no mistake to earn himself and Fowler half a point after initially trailing in the closing stages.

Gallacher/Poulter lose to Reed/Spieth 5&4

Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher have slumped to a 5&4 defeat to American duo Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.
Much of this week's build-up has focused on the European talisman and Scottish rookie, but both were under-par as the American pairing took centre stage at Gleneagles.
An excellent approach on the first from Reed got USA off to the perfect start, and Poulter and Gallacher spent much of the early holes fighting to keep in touch with the rookies.
However, both Reed and Spieth holed birdies before the turn to put them in full control, and their dominance continued as they created a six-shot gap by the 11th hole.
Europe improved to take the 12th - their first of the game - but a missed opening on 13 meant that USA maintained a five-shot gap with five to play.
However, a missed putt from Poulter on 14 allowed Spieth and Reed to seal what was an inevitable win to level the match up at 1-1.

Garcia/McIlroy lose to Bradley/Mickelson 1 up

USA have established the early lead after Friday morning's fourballs after Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradleyrecorded a last-hole victory over Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia.
After the opening three holes were shared, Garcia drew first blood for the home side by holing from the greenside bunker at the fourth, but the Spaniard missed a short putt on the seventh to allow USA to level the game.
A moment of brilliance from the bunker from Mickelson saw the American pairing edge ahead at the turn, and they extended that lead after Bradley holed out from distance on the 10th.
However, both Mickelson and Bradley made bogeys on the next hole to allow Europe to halve the deficit before they levelled the game with five to play.
In what was turning out to be a see-saw affair, McIlroy and Garcia edged ahead when Mickelson missed a short putt, but Bradley hit straight back for the Americans with an eagle on the par-five 16th.
The game went to the last hole with all four players failing to hit the green, but it was Bradley and Mickelson who made the best effort with their recovery shots to leave Mickelson with a three-foot putt to steal the point from Europe.
USA's win has given them a 2.5-1.5 lead over Europe after the first four matches.

Day 1 Foursomes
Europe 3.5 - 0.5 USA
Donaldson/Westwood beat Furyk/Kuchar 2 UP
Europe have won the first foursome match on day one of the 40th Ryder Cup thanks to Jamie Donaldson and Lee Westwood's 2 Up victory over Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar.
All four men were making their first appearances at Gleneagles after sitting out the first session and it was Furyk and Kuchar who struck the first blow as Europe bogeyed the par 4.
Donaldson and Westwood were level at the sixth as the latter curled in a right-to-left putt before they took the lead on the next hole when Kuchar missed a short putt for par.
Holes eight, nine and 10 were halved before Westwood rolled home another birdie putt at the 11th to put the Europeans 2 Up.
Soon after Donaldson made an important putt of his own from 25 feet to halve the 14th hole and maintain the hosts' two-hole lead.
Furyk and Kuchar reduced the deficit on the 16th to ensure they didn't go Dormie 2 behind.
The par-3 17th was halved to guarantee Europe of a half-point before the par-5 18th.
Westwood and Furyk slapped a pair of fairway woods left of the green and it was Kuchar who felt the pressure, leaving his pitch short to effectively hand Europe the win.
The point draws Europe back level on the overall scoreboard after the US won the morning session 2.5-1.5.

Rose/Stenson beat Mahan/Johnson 2&1
Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson continued their 100% record together at the 40th Ryder Cup by defeating Team USA's Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson 2&1 this afternoon.
After convincingly beating Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson this morning in fourballs, Rose and Stenson started well again but blew a two-hole lead on the front nine to be level with Mahan and Johnson at the halfway stage.
The par-3 10th was halved in pars before Johnson missed his birdie putt at 11 as Rose made his to restore the hosts' lead.
It looked like America would restore parity quickly at the 12th, but Rose again found his form with the short stick, holing a lengthy putt to halve the hole.
At 14, Mahan rolled home an eight-footer to level the match, but that would be USA's last victory in this match.
Rose and Stenson won the 15th and 17th to secure victory, with Johnson guilty of missing a short putt at the 17th that would have sent the match down the 18th.
A point for Europe puts them back in front 3.5-2.5 on the overall scoreboard.

McIlroy/Garcia A/S Walker/Fowler
Highly-ranked European duo Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia avoided going pointless on day one of the Ryder Cup with a late fightback against Team USA's Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker in this afternoon's foursomes.
After suffering a final-hole defeat to Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson in a long-winded fourball match earlier,Europe's marquee pairing again struggled with inconsistency in the afternoon.
The opening two holes were halved against Fowler and Walker before the American duo made a mess of the 3rd to edge Europe into the lead.
At the tough par-4 5th, Garcia wildly snap-hooked his drive out-of-bounds and even though Fowler and Walker themselves could only make bogey, it was still better than the European score.
Garcia responded to his errant tee shot on the previous hole with a long birdie putt at the 6th to restore his team's lead in the match. However, the duo would bogey the next hole to surrender the initiative once more.
Holes eight, nine and 10 were halved before the Americans took the initiative and went 2 Up with a birdie at 11 and par at 12, which was better than the European bogey.
McIlroy and Garcia pulled one back at the 13th but then struggled on the 15th after Garcia tugged another drive way left of the fairway.
The par-5 16th was halved in birdie fours before world-number-one McIlroy produced one of the moments of the Cup so far with a massive birdie putt at 17 to ensure that the match was not lost.
The Northern Irishman's drive off the 18th was poor, but fortunately it ricocheted off a tree and sat up in the rough to give Garcia a decent chance to reach the par 5 in two and the Spaniard did just that with a high, arcing five-wood that stopped dead on the green.
Fowler and Walker were only able to make par, which was one more than the European birdie so the match was halved. Garcia and McIlroy finished with three straight birdies to avoid defeat.

Dubuisson/McDowell beat Mickelson/Bradley 3&2
Europe's Victor Dubuisson and Graeme McDowell have inflicted a first Ryder Cup defeat on the lead Team USAduo of Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson to give Europe a 5-3 lead after day one at Gleneagles.
After winning all three of their matches together at Medinah two years ago, Bradley and Mickelson extended that streak to four with a late triumph over Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia in this morning's fourballs.
However, they were behind from the second hole this afternoon and never really looked like getting back into the match against the fresher pair of Dubuisson and McDowell, who sat out the morning session.
The European pair were 3 Up after five holes thanks to three bogeys from Bradley and Mickelson, who fought back to just 1 Down at the turn thanks to victories on the 8th and 9th.
Another bogey came at 10 for the Americans though and Dubuisson, who was making his debut at the Ryder Cup, made no mistake with the European putt for par.
It was the same story at the 12th, with Europe again consistently making pars as the jaded Bradley and Mickelson could only manage bogey for the fourth time.
Dubuisson and McDowell made their first bogey of the day at the next hole to give back a shot, but it wouldn't be crucial as a birdie at the par-5 16th secured a 3&2 victory.
It means that at the end of the afternoon session, Europe picked up three-and-a-half out of four points to roar back from the disappointing morning fourballs.
