Aviva Premiership Final 28/05/16

Saracens 28-20 Exeter

Saracens beat Exeter Chiefs to win the Premiership final and become the first English side to complete a domestic and European double since 2004.

Exeter, in their first play-off final, were blown away by a faultless first half from Sarries, who led 23-6 through Duncan Taylor and Chris Wyles scores.

Jack Yeandle and Jack Nowell crossed after the break as a rejuvenated Chiefs reduced the deficit to three points.

But Alex Goode's late try secured the title for the defending champions.

Victory also means Mark McCall's side become the first English club since Wasps 12 years ago to win the top-flight and European titles in the same season.

Super League Magic Weekend Sat 21st May and Sun 22nd May

Saturday 21st May

Salford Red Devils 18-12 Widnes Vikings

Salford extended Widnes' losing run to eight Super League games with victory in Saturday's Magic Weekend opener at St James' Park.

Having gone ahead through Daniel Vidot's try, Salford were overhauled by Rhys Hanbury and Chris Bridge scores.

However, they fought back after half-time with Justin Carney's try to close to within two points.

Vidot's second try against a tiring Vikings and a Gareth O'Brien penalty proved enough to snatch the points.

Having been dealt a six-point deduction for breaking salary cap rules, Salford, whose owner Marwan Koukash this week called for the Super League to split from the Rugby Football League, have dropped out of the top eight but their chances of returning there have been boosted by this result.

Widnes looked to have given their large travelling contingent another happy Tyneside away day in their Sir Bobby Robson charity shirts on half-back Kevin Brown's return but they faded against Salford's powerful pack late on.

It might have been different had video referee Phil Bentham awarded some first-half Vikings tries but the same could be said of Salford in the second period.

Widnes' loss of form will be a concern to coach Denis Betts, with Salford and Hull KR now four and three points behind them respectively in the race for the final top eight spot ahead of the Super Eights phase of the season.

Warrington Wolves 14-34 Castleford Tigers

Castleford scored 34 unanswered points to condemn leaders Warrington to their second straight Super League defeat.

The Wire led 14-0 after 30 minutes courtesy of tries from Stefan Ratchford, Kurt Gidley and Ben Currie.

Luke Dorn and Grant Millington reduced the deficit to two points at half-time before Denny Solomona put Cas ahead minutes after the restart.

Further scores Mike McMeeken, Solomona and Dorn stunned the St James' Park Magic Weekend crowd.

Warrington went into their first encounter with Castleford at a Magic Weekend looking to bounce back from last week's 36-28 defeat by Wakefield, and they were in complete control for the first 30 minutes.

But Castleford refused to lie down and when full-back Dorn, who will retire at the end of the season, finished off a sensational team try, the momentum in the game shifted.

Tigers, who came into the game off the back of a huge 52-12 victory over Leeds Rhinos, then posted 22 second-half points as Wolves' wobble continued.

They remain top of Super League on points difference but have lost five of their last eight matches, and both Catalans Dragons will have the chance to move top when they play Wakefield tomorrow.

Leeds Rhinos 8-40 Wigan Warriors

Wigan went level on points with Warrington, Catalans Dragons and Hull FC at the top of the Super League table with a Magic Weekend win over Leeds.

Kallum Watkins gave the bottom-of-the-table Rhinos an early lead but Willie Isa's first two Wigan tries put them 12-4 ahead at the break.

George Williams, Dom Manfredi and Ben Flower put the Warriors in control before Mitch Achurch pulled one back.

But Oliver Gildart and Dan Sarginson went over late on to wrap up the win.

Wigan's victory, complete with their biggest points haul of the season, leaves four teams separated by only points difference at the top of the table, although Catalans and Hull both have the opportunity to take over as leaders if they beat Wakefield and Hull KR respectively on Sunday.

Shaun Wane's Warriors came into the game having suffered back-to-back league defeats but knowing that they had not been beaten at Magic Weekend since 2008.

And once they went in front they proved too good for out-of-sorts Leeds, whose nightmare season since winning the treble last year shows no signs of ending.

The Rhinos have now lost five successive games in all competitions and defeat leaves them six points away from eighth-placed Widnes in the race for a top-eight finish before the league splits.

Sunday 22nd May

Wakefield Wildcats 25-24 Catalans Dragons

Jacob Miller scored a late long-range drop goal as Wakefield came from behind to overcome an in-form Catalans side.

Catalans led 14-0 through tries from Justin Horo, Jodie Broughton and Tony Gigot before Ben Jones-Bishop scored either side of half time to reduce the deficit to two points.

Michael Sio then gave Trinity the lead before Vincent Duport and Broughton's second put Dragons back in control.

But Mickael Simon tied the game before Miller's winning 77-minute drop goal.

Having already squandered three of his five conversion attempts, Pat Richards could have won the game for Catalans just two minutes earlier, but his penalty hit the post.

The Wildcats came into the clash having won six of their last seven league games since Chris Chester took over in March, but they were without a win at Magic Weekend since 2012.

They faced a Catalans side who had not lost at Magic Weekend since 2011 and were also on an impressive run of eight wins in nine league matches.

Dragons, knowing a win would send them stop, got off to a flying start but they were pegged back by a resilient Wakefield side, who pulled level at 24-24 with eight minutes to play.

Following Richards' miss, Miller then lined up from 50 metres out and, from the half-way line, his stunning drop goal moved Wakefield up to sixth in the table, just four points off top spot.

St Helens 20-48 Huddersfield Giants

Second-from-bottom Huddersfield Giants put in an impressive performance to beat St Helens at St James' Park.

The Giants scored three tries in seven minutes through Jermaine McGillvary, Ukuma Ta'ai and Jamie Ellis.

Matty Dawson replied for Saints before the break but scores from McGillvary, Sam Rapira and Murphy made it 34-6.

Jack Owens, Theo Fages and Adam Swift scored either side of Danny Brough's penalty to give Saints hope but Ryan Hincliffe and Kyle Wood sealed victory.

Hull FC 28-16 Hull KR

Hull FC pulled two points clear at the Super League summit with a 28-16 Magic Weekend derby win against Hull KR.

Tries from Mahe Fonua and Curtis Naughton built up a Black and Whites lead cut to two at the break by Shaun Lunt and Terry Campese's penalty.

Campese notched another following the interval before Graeme Horne's score put Rovers ahead.

Fonua's second levelled before efforts from Jamie Shaul and Mark Minichello pulled the Airlie Birds clear.

The final game of the weekend kept the interest of sizeable followings from both clubs, although those in red and white were silenced by the second-half flurry.

After coming into the game joint-top, Lee Radford's side took the opportunity to stretch clear after results across the weekend went their way.

Rovers were underdogs on a form basis but their aggressive approach was more than a match for much of the game.

Ultimately Hull's strike won them the game, with Fonua, Naughton and Shaul from full-back cutting the Robins open.

There were flash points in keeping with such a rivalry, notably when Maurice Blair scragged Marc Sneyd - sparking an all-in scuffle.

But Hull had the composure and ruthlessness to edge their rivals and climb clear at the summit.

Aviva Premiership Semi Finals Sat 21st May 2016

Saracens 44-17 Leicester Tigers

Saracens remain on course for a domestic and European double after beating Leicester to reach a third successive Premiership final.

After the Tigers had a first-minute Manu Tuilagi effort ruled out, Saracens eased clear with four first-half tries.

Chris Wyles scored twice and Will Fraser and Chris Ashton touched down as they led 31-0 at the break.

Telusa Veainu and Dom Barrow threatened a fightback but Ashton's second sealed victory for the Champions Cup winners.

They will now face Exeter Chiefs or Wasps at Twickenham next Saturday, bidding to become the first English side since Wasps in 2004 to claim both the Premiership and European crowns.

Exeter 34-23 Wasps

Exeter Chiefs reached the Premiership final for the first time in their history after a tense win over Wasps.

A see-saw first half saw the lead change hands four times as Carlo Festuccia's close-range score for Wasps was cancelled out by Ian Whitten's try.

Dan Robson restored Wasps' lead but a penalty try late in the half gave Exeter a 20-14 lead at the break.

Dave Ewers went over for the Chiefs soon after the restart before a late penalty try sent them to Twickenham.

That last-minute score sealed the biggest win in the club's history and set up a meeting with reigning Premiership and European champion Saracens.

Super League 28th April to 1st May 2016

Thursday 28th April

Warrington Wolves 40-10 Wigan Warriors

Warrington Wolves completed a Super League double over Wigan to move two points clear at the top of the table.

Tony Smith's side followed up a 28-16 win at Wigan on 1 April with a convincing home victory, although they fell behind to Josh Charnley's try.

Daryl Clark, Ben Westwood and Kevin Penny all crossed for the hosts before half-time to forge an 18-4 lead.

Ryan Atkins' brace, Benjamin Jullien and Westwood's second sealed Wire's biggest Super League win over Wigan.

The Warriors, for whom captain John Bateman scored a late consolation, would have gone top themselves with a win but defeat left them third.

Catalans Dragons will join Warrington at the summit on 20 points if they win at Hull on Friday.

The two tightest defences in the division at the start of play held firm until Charnley slid in at the corner after 17 minutes, but Shaun Wane's 150th game as Wigan head coach quickly turned sour as Clark and Westwood, who barged over with his first touch of the game, overturned the deficit.

Warrington, who lost winger Tom Lineham to a head injury early in the first half, saw off a burst of Wigan pressure before Atkins' close-range try stretched the lead to 20 points and his second effectively killed the contest.

The Wolves' half-back pairing of Stefan Ratchford and Kurt Gidley, who extended his contract on Wednesday, played influential roles throughout, with Gidley also landing five of his six attempts at goal.

Friday 29th April

Huddersfield Giants 28-20 Leeds Rhinos

Huddersfield Giants ended a run of five straight derby defeats against Leeds Rhinos with Super League victory at the John Smith's Stadium.

Late tries from Jake Connor and Eorl Crabtree pulled the Giants away at the end of a seesaw battle between the two top-flight strugglers.

Leeds led by four at the break thanks to two goals from Jordan Lilley, with a try apiece from he and Ukuma Ta'ai.

The second period exploded in a flurry of points, but Giants came out on top.

Victory is a major boost for a Huddersfield side who were bottom before Salford's points deduction for a historic salary cap breach saw them slide to the foot of the table.

That said, Leeds were just two points above, with one of their three wins this term coming at home to the Giants earlier in the campaign.

After going in behind at half-time, Huddersfield showed character to see off the dogged Rhinos, as the two teams traded tries up to the final 12 minutes.

Gene Ormsby's score was wiped out by Josh Walters, while Rob Burrow did the same following Jermaine McGillvary's effort.

The two late tries ensured Paul Anderson's side returned to winning ways, but Leeds' concerns continue after losing for the 10th time in 2016.

Hull FC 28-26 Catalans Dragons

Catalans Dragons missed the chance to draw level on points with Super League leaders Warrington as Hull FC went third with a tense home victory.

Fetuli Talanoa and Curtis Naughton got Hull FC off the mark but Louis Anderson reduced the deficit for Catalans.

Sika Manu extended the hosts' lead but Pat Richards' double pulled the visitors back in it before the break.

Scott Taylor crossed for Hull FC before Jason Baitieri and Eloi Pelissier went over for the Dragons, but Hull held on.

Marc Sneyd also kicked six goals as Hull's win took them alongside the French side in the table on 18 points.

The result means Catalans remain in second place, when a win would have sent them level with Warrington at the top.

Catalans' task was made harder in the second half when forward Remi Casty was sin-binned, but they fought back to within two points of Hull late on after Taylor's try had put the hosts 26-14 ahead.

The victory was Hull's ninth win in Super League this season, achieved on the same day that head coach Lee Radford signed a new contract, and it extended their unbeaten run at the KC Stadium to four games.

Widnes Vikings 16-18 Wakefield Wildcats

Widnes Vikings slumped to a sixth consecutive First Utility Super League defeat after Craig Hall's last-gasp try secured Wakefield Trinity Wildcats a 18-16 victory in an ill-tempered clash.

The Vikings led 16-12 in the closing stages, but Hall touched down in the 78th minute and Liam Finn slotted over the kick to settle a contest which saw two players sent off and three sin-binned.

Wakefield hooker Scott Moore and Widnes scrum-half Aaron Heremaia were dismissed midway through the first half, with Vikings centre Patrick Ah Van having already been sin-binned and team-mates Lloyd White and Stefan Marsh following suit in the second period.

The visitors led 8-0 at half-time through an Anthony Tupou try and two Finn goals, but Widnes hit back early in the second half with tries from Charly Runciman and Eamon O'Carroll helping get them back to 10-10.

After Finn slotted over his second two-pointer of the half, Widnes went ahead for the first time in the match when Rhys Hanbury dummied his way over and tagged on the extras.

However, the Vikings' hearts were broken when Hall crossed and Finn kicked the vital conversion at the death.

Saturday 30th April

Salford Red Devils 44-26 Hull KR

Junior Sa'u scored a hat-trick as Salford bounced back from being deducted six points for breaching salary cap rules by beating Hull KR.

The hosts, who began the game bottom of Super League, ran in five first-half tries as they seized control.

Sa'u, Rob Lui, Niall Evalds, George Griffin and Josh Jones all scored as they led 28-6 at the break.

Thomas Minns scored twice as Rovers fought back but Sa'u grabbed two more and Lui a second to secure victory.

Maurice Blair, Iain Thornley and Ken Sio also scored for the Robins, who outscored their hosts four tries to three in the second half.

Sio's score was spectacular as he broke out of a two-man tackle to run in from 70m, but he injured himself while scoring and had to be helped from the field with oxygen.

Victory lifted Salford, who will be appealing against their points deduction and £5,000 fine for breaching salary cap regulations in 2014 and 2015, two places in the table, leaving last season's champions Leeds Rhinos bottom.

Sunday 1st May

Castleford Tigers 20-30 St Helens

St Helens scored four of their five tries after the break as they came from behind to win at Castleford.

The 2014 Super League champions were twice behind before finally seeing off brave but depleted Cas at the Jungle.

Joe Greenwood scored two of their tries, while Jonny Lomax followed up his two tries on his comeback against Leeds with Saints' final try.

Kyle Amor and Shannion McDonnnell were also on the scoresheet, while Luke Walsh kicked five goals.

Cas head coach Daryl Powell made three changes following last week's heavy defeat by Hull KR. and was rewarded with a much better performance.

They scored four tries through Joel Monaghan, Denny Solomona, Mike McMeeken and Jy Hitchcox, while Luke Gale kicked two goals.

Aviva Premiership 29th April to 1st May 2016

Friday 29th April

Sale Sharks 11-12 Gloucester

Greig Laidlaw kicked Gloucester to victory over Sale to deliver a blow to the Sharks' Premiership top-six hopes and end their unbeaten home record.

Danny Cipriani, playing his last game at the AJ Bell Stadium before moving to Wasps, exchanged penalties with Laidlaw to make it 6-6 at half-time.

Johnny Leota's try put Sale ahead after the break, before a further Laidlaw penalty kept the visitors in touch.

And the Scotland captain landed a late fourth kick to snatch victory.

Saturday 30th April

Leicester Tigers 31-17 Worcester

Leicester secured their place in the Premiership semi-finals for the 12th successive year with a bonus-point win over Worcester.

The hosts led 21-17 at the break with tries from Vereniki Goneva, Opeti Fonua and Telusa Veainu.

Bryce Heem and Andy Symons went over to keep Worcester in touch but as the weather worsened Leicester's pack gained the ascendency.

Will Evans secured the bonus point for Tigers and booked their play-off spot.

Northampton 15-14 Bath

Northampton moved up to fifth in the Premiership table thanks to a second-half comeback against Bath.

Saints dominated possession and territory in the first half but trailed 14-0 at the break through two converted tries from winger Jeff Williams.

After Bath's Chris Cook was sin-binned, Teimana Harrison touched down in the corner and a penalty from Stephen Myler reduced the arrears.

Mikey Haywood powered over late on and Myler converted to seal victory.

Sunday 1st May

Exeter 24-3 Wasps

Exeter Chiefs won comfortably to sneak back in front of Wasps in the battle to claim second place in the Premiership table and earn a home semi-final.

In stretching Wasps' losing record at Sandy Park, Exeter atoned for their European Cup quarter-final defeat earlier this month with three tries.

Winger Olly Woodburn showed great strength down the left for the opener.

Having led 10-3 at the break, Exeter then scored two more second-half tries through Phil Dollman and Jack Nowell.

Full-back Dollman slipped two weak tackles to sail over 'Chris Ashton-style' under the posts before England winger Nowell ran in his first Chiefs try in five months.

Even then, having twice let big leads slip against Wasps this season, there was concern among home ranks that the London-based side might still come back. But the rampant Chiefs finished strongly, their only disappointment being that they failed to get a bonus-point fourth try.

Phil Dollman went under the posts in elaborate style for Exeter's second try at Sandy Park
Exeter now in the box seat for second

The Chiefs had two more efforts chalked off by the officials, the second contentiously when it appeared replacement James Short might have beaten Wasps full-back Rob Miller to touch down a kick though from Gareth Steenson, who earned a nine-point haul from three conversions and a first-half penalty.

But it leaves Exeter in the box seat, knowing that if they win against at Harlequins at The Stoop next weekend, then second place will be assured and, unlikely though it might be, they could even still finish top if leaders Saracens slip up.

On a day when they suffered only a second Premiership loss in 13 games since the turn of the year, following last week's Champions Cup semi-final loss to Saracens, Wasps' only points came from the boot of centre Elliot Daly.

A bonus-point win by the visitors would have ensured a home semi, but they had lost on all six previous trips to Sandy Park and the local form book proved spot on.

For the record . . .

Both clubs had already assured themselves of a top-four finish to claim a place in the Premiership semi-finals.

For Exeter, it is the first time they have made the semis, six seasons after being promoted to the English top flight, while Wasps are in the last four for the first time since winning the Premiership title in 2007-08.

Wasps' only win on Devon soil in competitive rugby remains their Pilkington Cup quarter-final at the old County Ground in February 1995.

The two sides have met three times this season, the first two of which were at the Ricoh Arena. The Chiefs won 41-27 in the Premiership in December, before Wasps made amends three weeks ago by winning 25-24 in the Champions Cup quarter-final. They may now meet again, most likely at Sandy Lane, in the semis.

London Irish 25-32 Harlequins (London Irish relegated)

London Irish suffered relegation from the Premiership as Harlequins battled to victory at the Madejski Stadium.

Quins ran in three tries in the opening 22 minutes as Charlie Walker crossed twice and Ross Chisholm dotted down.

The Exiles rallied with tries from Luke Narraway and Asaeli Tikoirotuma to only trail 22-15 at half-time.

David Paice's score then levelled matters for Irish before a late try from Quins prop Kyle Sinckler sent Irish down to the Championship.

It is the first time Irish have dropped out of England's top flight since 1994, having won just four of their 21 league games so far this season.

Head coach Tom Coventry took charge of Irish at the start of the season after they finished 10th last year, but it took until Boxing Day for them to win their first league game.

Harlequins, who are losing director of rugby Conor O'Shea this summer when he goes to Italy, secured a bonus point with Sinckler's fourth try which moves them up to sixth above Sale in the table.

They host second-placed Exeter on the final day of the campaign, while Irish are at third-placed Wasps.

Saracens 23-14 Newcastle Falcons

Saracens guaranteed top spot in the Premiership with a comeback win at home to Newcastle Falcons.

After Charlie Hodgson's early penalty put Sarries ahead, Marcus Watson scored two converted tries to put the visitors 14-3 up at half-time.

A brace of tries from Jackson Wray put the hosts back ahead before Maro Itoje's score secured victory.

Newcastle secured their top-flight status for next season despite defeat, as London Irish lost to Harlequins.
